After successful field tests of the variety have been concluded The Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Department will introduce a higher resistance and longer shelf-life NPS-5 varieties of mushrooms to be used in commercial cultivation in September this year.
K.K. Sharma Director for the Department of Agriculture: “Our second strain is named NPS-5 (a type of fungus). We are developing the master cultivar. Seeds will be distributed to farmers in September of the following year (for commercial agriculture within Jammu as well as Kashmir).”
The trial, he said, proved success. “It does not suffer from the presence of water in low levels, extreme water circumstances, and high concentrations in carbon dioxide. It has non-browning properties. It also has a longer shelf time”.
The department is operating on multiple areas to ensure the development of the industry of mushrooms throughout Jammu as well as Kashmir.
