Nigeria to produce bioethanol from cassava

Plantations International News The Nigerian Cassava Growers’ Association (NCGA) has partnered with the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), an international private infrastructure financier, to set up a bioethanol plant, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. National president of NCGA Segun Adewumi says the plant, which is to use cassava as feedstock, will also serve as a bioenergy and power generation plant for ten states of the West African federal republic. ‘NCGA is planning to establish ethanol factories across the nation that will produce millions of litres of ethanol in a year. We are focusing on ten states and the requirement [...]

Florida Biodiesel delivers biodiesel plant to the Bahamas

Plantations International News Cookies are required to use this site. Please turn them on! This website requires javascript to be enabled. September 18, 2015 Florida Biodiesel has completed the sale of a B-500 biodiesel plant to the Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) in the Bahamas. The biodiesel production equipment, using waste cooking oil as feedstock, will be used to demonstrate green fuel technology and produce biodiesel for the Bahamas. The B-500 plant is economical to operate and will allow the GBPC to produce 1,600 gallons of biodiesel a day. The plant will also be used as a hands-on educational tool to [...]

Oakland Biofuels looks to help farmers by producing cellulosic ethanol from bracken

Plantations International News Oakland Biofuels is looking to launch a new cellulosic ethanol production technology in Mid-Wales, UK, using bracken as a feedstock. The facility will be the first of its kind in Europe to use the new technology in conjunction with bracken. Jeremy Oakley, director of Oakland Biofuels, says the company has been looking for alternative uses for bracken already for some years, with the main focus being on renewable energy. ‘Bracken has been the scourge of most hill and upland farmers for many years and is rapidly becoming out of control as its growing area increases year on year [...]

Advait to turn KFC’s used cooking oil to biodiesel

September 17, 2015 Advait, a newly established biofuel company, has signed a contract with Yum! Restaurants India, which operates KFC Taco Bell and Pizza Hut in the country, to collect used cooking oil (UCO) from KFC in the Andhra and Telangana region. Advait will convert the collected product into biodiesel or export it to Europe for biodiesel processing. The company is one of the major (UCO) collectors in India and currently collects oil from four South Indian states, and it [...]

Canadian researchers: Sugar corn could fuel ethanol production

Plantations International News Canadian farmers might one day grow sugar corn for a potentially huge alternative fuels market through a new project involving University of Guelph researchers. Along with scientists from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), and Western University, the Guelph researchers will study sugar corn varieties whose higher sucrose concentrations might make them more suitable for making ethanol. The sugar comes from juices in corn stalks, similar to sugar from Brazilian sugar cane, which are then pressed to collect the juice, which is fermented into ethanol. Project leader Professor Brandon Gilroyed, [...]

EU extends import duties on US biodiesel until 2020

Plantations International News             Cookies are required to use this site. Please turn them on! This website requires javascript to be enabled. September 15, 2015 The EU will extend anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on imported US biodiesel until 2020, according to Reuters. The duties were extended in an EU attempt to maintain its defence against trade in renewable fuels. The EU argues that should the duties, originally set in 2009 on certain US biodiesel producers, be lifted, the resulting increase in imports could damage European biofuels production. At issue was a US tax credit of $ [...]

Cardiff University researchers improve biodiesel yields

Plantations International News Researchers at Cardiff University have devised a way of increasing the yield of biodiesel by using the waste left over from its production process. Using simple catalysis, the researchers have been able to recycle an undesired by-product of the vegetable-oil-to-biodiesel conversion process, and convert this residue into an ingredient to produce even more biodiesel. It is believed this new process will have significant environmental benefits by improving the yield of biodiesel in a sustainable way that doesn’t require the use of additional fossil fuels and could potentially reduce the costs of the biodiesel production process. The results were [...]
