Plantations International News Green Plains and petrol retailer Murphy USA have signed a definitive agreement regarding the purchase by Green Plains of Murphy USA's ethanol production facility located in Hereford, Texas. Under the terms of the agreement, Green Plains will acquire Hereford Renewable Energy for approximately $ 93.8 million (€85 million), subject to customary closing adjustments. The transaction value includes $ 78.5 million for the ethanol production facility with the balance for working capital. Nigeria to produce bioethanol from cassava

Plantations International News The Nigerian Cassava Growers’ Association (NCGA) has partnered with the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), an international private infrastructure financier, to set up a bioethanol plant, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. Oakland Biofuels looks to help farmers by producing cellulosic ethanol from bracken

Used cooking oil from KFCs in India to be converted to biodiesel

Restaurants India Pvt Ltd., which operates KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut in India, has signed an agreement with Advait to collect its used cooking oil (UCO) from KFC in the Andhra and Telangana regions.  Yum! is aggressively expanding its presence in India. Researchers in Wales synthesize methanol from crude glycerin

Plantations International News Researchers from Cardiff Catalysis Institute in Wales have developed a way to increase the yield of biodiesel by using simple catalysis to convert glycerin from the transesterification process into methanol. The researchers reacted glycerin with water, to provide hydrogen, with a magnesium oxide (MgO) catalyst. The reaction involved a simple one-step process and could be performed using mild conditions. Since biodiesel is formed by reacting fats, oils and greases with methanol, the researchers estimate up to a 10 percent increase in biodiesel production when using methanol produced from crude glycerin.
